When I made the resolution to travel more last New Year’s Eve, I didn’t have shooting up and down I-45 in mind. I was thinking new cities, new experiences, and more planes rather than road trips. However, God’s plans were much different than that of my own. In February, I accepted a job with the Dallas Stars Foundation, leading me to spend more time traveling. I live in Houston, and my family has done road trips all my life. Growing up, I’d come home from school and pack a weekend bag to drive across Texas to the deer lease with my older brothers and parents. These trips would be anywhere from 8 to 10 hours long. I went to college 6 hours away and would make the trip home every so often; so needless to say, the 4-hour drive to Dallas was not much of anything. Hell, some nights it takes me over an hour to get across Houston just to play in a pick up soccer game; 4 hours was nothing.

As I sit here, I can’t help but look back and laugh at the past 10 months. I took a job in another city, one of which I commute 4 hours for every home game. I had wanted new cities and new experiences, and I did not fail. The more time I spend in Dallas, the more there is that I love. Don’t get me wrong, Houston is infinitely better than Dallas, but I have found a kindred home feeling in our rival city. The new experiences have been abundant. Every trip I take to Dallas I seem to find more and more interesting spots, as well as cozy nooks. I have regular eateries, which the managers know me by, and am always greeted with a warm smile and the most delicious hot chocolate. I have gained a new family and great friends through this, and a new love for a sport where you can fight people who piss you off. Dope.

The 2017-2018 season will be my first FULL season working in the NHL, and I could not be more stoked. Earlier this evening I was putting together my schedule for my kiddos I’m doing private soccer lessons with, and was almost blown away with how often I’ll be gone. I’m watching a lot of my friends settle in and down, meanwhile I’m bouncing throughout Texas, all while completing my senior year of college.

I guess this post is simply one of reflection. A reminder, maybe, that some things won’t always work along with the plans you’ve made for yourself, but those that God has for you. Never in a million years did I see myself working in Dallas, much less in Hockey, and loving it as much as I do. I get to do what I love and give back through it.

And here I am.

Traveling, growing, learning.

Maybe next year is the year I start hopping on more planes, but for now, I’m good with my truck, I-45, and the aux cord.

Peace, love, & puppies,
